随着中国经济的发展和国际交往的日益广泛，世界各国对汉语学习的需求急剧增长。
从2004年开始，在借鉴英、法、德、西等国推广本民族语言经验的基础上，探索在海外设立以教授汉语和传播中国文化为宗旨的非营利性公益机构，取名为“孔子学院”。
截至去年8月底，各国已建立353所孔子学院和473个孔子课堂，共计826所，分布在104个国家（地区）。
各地孔子学院充分利用自身优势，开展丰富多彩的教学和文化活动，成为各国学习汉语言文化、了解当代中国的重要场所。
孔子学院总部设在国家汉办（中国国家汉语国际推广领导小组办公室）。
