如果說，美國歷史上的些許小事,顯著地改變了這個國家的發展軌跡，1953年1月20日的某個時刻,應該算是其中之一。

萬一尼克松要求重新計票，肯尼迪很可能難圓總統夢。後者,坐立不安，很想和對手會上一面,探個虛實。他轉念一想，覺得:如果直接去找尼克松，對方很可能根本不搭理自己。
大選結束後，肯尼迪與尼克松正好都在佛羅里達州休假。肯尼迪的父親-約瑟夫·肯尼迪聞訊靈機一動，撥通了前總統胡佛的電話。胡佛與尼克松是老相識，遂親自向後者建言：“這個世界的麻煩夠多了，有時候,維護統一,不但最可取，並且,至關重要。”言外之意是，尼克松應以大局為重，盡快與肯尼迪會面。尼克鬆有所顧忌，認為:肯尼迪此舉只是“一場廉價的政治秀”，胡佛反駁說，從肯尼迪的角度來看，這樣做,顯得有雅量。
尼克松仍不放心，認為:應徵求現任總統艾森豪威爾的意見。結果，艾克（艾森豪威爾的暱稱）的意見,與胡佛一致：“如果你不去，反倒顯得落魄。”兩人正說著，又一個電話打進來，這次是肯尼迪本人。兩位政壇新星就順水推舟地會了面。後來的事情,盡人皆知：尼克松大度地放棄了重新計票，成全了肯尼迪的總統夢，自己度過了8年,才入主白宮。
