（2012-03-04,墨尔本）澳大利亚新任外长卡尔，与马来西亚有着特殊渊源。卡尔的妻子海伦娜，来自马来西亚霹雳州的太平。
66岁的海伦娜,是（华人/印度/印尼）混血儿，她是6名兄弟姐妹中的老幺。海伦娜,1965年到澳大利亚求学，毕业于悉尼大学经济系。卡尔和海伦娜,1972年,在大溪地岛旅游时认识，隔年,在悉尼结婚。
海伦娜,1980年代开始,在澳大利亚经商，成绩不俗，她过后,把生意结束。

路透社援引消息人士的话报道，吉拉德内阁多名成员，先前反对卡尔出任外长；吉拉德本人，此前多次否认考虑邀请卡尔入阁。
根据改组方案，先前明确表态支持陆克文的内阁成员中，麦克莱兰遭弃用；金·卡尔不再担任创新、工业和科技部长，改任相对次要的公共事业和社会包容部部长；移民和公民事务部长克里斯·鲍恩，以及资源和能源部长马丁·弗格森留任。
吉拉德在记者会上，否认弃用麦克莱兰与他支持陆克文相关，称，所作取舍，“取决于能力以及如何打造最强团队”。
