我不去，谁去
1947年,罗姆尼出生在一个摩门教世家。祖上曾追随教派创始人约瑟夫·史密斯四处传教，后来,定居犹他州。他的父亲乔治·罗姆尼,原为一名成功商人，后弃商从政，担任过三届密歇根州州长，是1968年总统选举共和党候选人的有力竞争者，在尼克松总统任期内,曾任内阁官员。罗姆尼的母亲,也曾竞选密歇根州的联邦参议员，虽然,成功通过初选,最后以失败告终。

罗姆尼涉足商界的成功经历,为他角逐2008年总统大选,提供了充足的竞选资金。在“金钱就是政治母乳”的美国，没有充足的资金支持，谁都不敢涉足总统竞选。
《 波士顿环球报》报道，早在2004年，罗姆尼就在亚里桑那、艾奥瓦等五个州建立“政治行动委员会”，通过将捐款者分布在不同地区的战略，在不违反联邦竞选法的情况下，争取更多的资金支持。而且，罗姆尼个人,有近3亿美元的资产，在竞选的关键时刻，这些资金,将发挥不容忽视的作用。
通往白宫之路
罗姆尼的竞选道路并非一帆风顺，他的摩门教身份,有可能成为他登上总统宝座的最大障碍。
摩门教的正式名称,为“耶稣基督后期圣徒教会”，于19世纪30年代起,源于美国
西部。它的信徒认为，耶稣基督复活之后,曾经光临北美洲，未来,将回到密苏里州的杰克逊县重新统治世界。目前,摩门教信徒有1200万，大本营在美国犹他州盐湖城。该教非常注重传教和慈善事业，以禁用茶、咖啡、酒精饮料、烟草而著称，其教规之一,就是信众将其收入的10%,捐献给教堂。然而，由于早年摩门教曾允许“一夫多妻”制，被正统的基督教派排斥，甚至有人称之为“邪教”。 为平息共和党选民对其信仰的疑虑，罗姆尼曾多次公开表达对摩门教历史上一些做法的厌恶之情，包括,一夫多妻制和种族歧视。在一次接受采访时，罗姆尼甚至表示，基督将会返回圣城耶路撒冷重新统治世界,这显然与摩门教信仰相矛盾，并为此受到摩门教徒的指责。

2011年6月2日，美国马萨诸塞州前州长米特·罗姆尼正式宣布参加2012年总统竞选。
罗姆尼当天,在新罕布什尔州举行的一个活动上,宣布将角逐共和党总统候选人提名。在约30分钟的演讲中，罗姆尼大谈经济和就业，表示,若其当选总统，将以创造就业为首要任务。他同时,批评奥巴马政府经济政策，指责奥巴马让美国经济衰退更加严重、持续更久。
